The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become the newest dialogue partner of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), according to reports in Gulf media. A memorandum of understanding was signed between the UAE and the SCO during a meeting in Goa, India, marking a significant milestone in the country’s foreign policy.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is a Eurasian political, economic, and security alliance established in 2001 by China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The organization aims to promote regional stability, security, and economic cooperation among its member states.

The UAE’s decision to become a dialogue partner of the SCO is part of a broader trend in the region of countries seeking to strengthen ties with the organization, which counts heavyweight nations such as China, India, and Russia among its members.

The move is expected to enhance the UAE’s economic and political ties with SCO member states, with potential benefits including increased trade, investment, and cultural exchange. As a dialogue partner, the UAE will also have the opportunity to participate in SCO meetings and activities, offering a platform for greater engagement and collaboration with member states.

Commenting on the news, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, said: “The UAE’s dialogue partnership with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is an important step towards enhancing our relations with the SCO countries. We look forward to working closely with the organization to promote regional stability, security, and economic growth.”

The UAE has a longstanding tradition of engaging with multilateral organizations and forging strategic partnerships around the world. In recent years, the country has sought to expand its international reach through a range of initiatives, including the UAE’s Vision 2021 strategy, which aims to transform the country into a global knowledge economy.

As a dialogue partner of the SCO, the UAE will have the opportunity to play a more active role in shaping regional security and economic policies, while also enhancing its reputation as a reliable and influential partner in the Middle East.
