Peru Congress Votes Against A Motion to Impeach President Castillo
Peru’s Congress voted against a motion to impeach President Pedro Castillo Terrones on Tuesday. The motion was rejected with 76 votes of 130. Forty-six members of Congress backed the proposal while four abstained. Consequently, President of Congress Maricarmen Alva Prieto suspended the session late in the evening. Right-wing parties introduced the impeachment motion in Congress in October, citing corruption allegations against the President. They also accused him of appointing the senior officials with ties to terrorism who are currently under investigation. Peru Libre leader Vladimir Cerron said on Twitter after the vote that the impeachment motion failed, fascism failed, and the parliamentary blow to democracy failed. Before the vote, many protesters also gathered in Peru both for and against President Castillo.
