Peru Congress Votes Against A Motion to Impeach President Castillo

Peru - President Castillo - Impeachment

Peru’s Congress voted against a motion to impeach President Pedro Castillo Terrones on Tuesday. The motion was rejected with 76 votes of 130. Forty-six members of Congress backed the proposal while four abstained. Consequently, President of Congress Maricarmen Alva Prieto suspended the session late in the evening. Right-wing parties introduced the impeachment motion in Congress in October, citing corruption allegations against the President. They also accused him of appointing the senior officials with ties to terrorism who are currently under investigation.

Peru Libre leader Vladimir Cerron said on Twitter after the vote that the impeachment motion failed, fascism failed, and the parliamentary blow to democracy failed. Before the vote, many protesters also gathered in Peru both for and against President Castillo.

Anti-Corruption Commission

Pedro Castillo Terrones said on Thursday that he will lead the 39th session of the High-Level Anti-Corruption Commission after Peru’s Congress refused to debate the impeachment motion. This session will analyze a strategy and executive power for preventing corruption in Peru. The session will also show a presentation on promoting civil values on how to eradicate corruption from Peru.

Pedro Castillo Terrones was elected as the President in July.  However, his image was destroyed amid corruption allegations and widespread protests in mining communities. Subsequently, opposition parties Fuerza Popular, Renovación Popular, and Avanza País filed a vacancy motion against him.

According to Bloomberg Quint, Peru’s laws make it easy to remove a head of state. In September, a US judge ordered that former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo be extradited to Peru. He went to the US when Peru charged him with the case of money laundering. He was also removed as the President of the country. Former President Martin Vizcarra was also impeached in 2020. Impeachment of Presidents has become quite common in Peru as the country has had five presidents since 2016.
