Putin hopes WHO soon approves Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday said that he
hopes the World Health Organization (WHO) approves the country’s Sputnik V
coronavirus vaccine. He further said that the move is essential for expanding
its global supplies.
He reportedly spoke during a video call with Francesco
Rocca, president of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent
Societies. Putin said that receiving the WHO’s approval is necessary to spread
the Russian vaccine across the world, including free supplies. He also said
that approval would open the door for Russians and others who have had the
Sputnik V vaccine to travel more freely around the world. Russia was the first country in
the world to get a coronavirus vaccine by launching the Sputnik V vaccine in
August 2020. Several countries have already
imposed new travel restrictions on passengers traveling from other countries. Passengers arriving from
‘high-risk’ countries are required to undergo an RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain
reaction) test.
Vladimir
Putin on Sputnik V
Putin reportedly was
vaccinated with Sputnik V in the spring. Last month he also received a booster
shot of Sputnik Light, the one-dose version. Subsequently, he also took an
experimental nasal version of Sputnik V days after receiving his booster shot.
He claimed that he felt no side effects. The country actively promoted Sputnik
V around the world. However, Russia faced obstruction in shipping the amounts
it promised.

Sputnik V on Omicron variant
The Gamaleya Institute
that developed Sputnik V said the vaccine should be efficient against the
omicron variant of COVID-19. However, later on, the institute announced that
the vaccine will immediately start working on adapting it to counter the new
variant. The Omicron
variant is much deadlier and is also spreading faster than the other variants.
Reportedly, fully vaccinated people are also getting infected by the Omicron
variant.
