UAE flights to Israel affected by strike action against Benjamin Netanyahu
Protests against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's planned judicial overhaul have affected a flight from Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Tel Aviv, a city on Israel’s Mediterranean coast.
An Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi to Tel Aviv returned
back due to unplanned industrial action at Ben Gurion International Airport,
the main international airport of Israel.
Reportedly, the protests in Israel can affect tens of
thousands of people because Israel’s Airports Authority announced the
suspension of flights due to an unplanned industrial action.
An Etihad Airways representative reportedly told The
National, “Etihad flight EY593 from Abu Dhabi to Tel Aviv on March 27 has
returned to Abu Dhabi because of an unplanned industrial action.”
Etihad Airways flight EY593 from Abu Dhabi to Tel Aviv and
EY594 from Tel Aviv to Abu Dhabi on Monday also got cancelled. Protests also
blocked a main highway.
Thousands of Israelis took to the streets in recent weeks to
protest against the government’s judicial reform plans. Israel’s largest trade
union also called a strike over this issue. Israelis and opposition political
leaders opposed a proposed overhaul of the country's legal system.
On Monday, the President of Israel, Isaac Herzog appealed to
Prime Minister Netanyahu to immediately halt his controversial judicial
overhaul reforms. His comments came after Netanyahu sacked Defence Minister
Yoav Gallant for opposing his judicial reform.
The Israeli President reportedly said in a statement,
"Our security, economy, society — all are under threat. The whole people
of Israel are looking at you. I call on you to halt the legislative process
immediately.”
Recently, Netanyahu agreed to delay the process for
discussions on the planned judicial overhaul to next month. Security Minister
Itamar Ben-Gvir said that the legislation would be submitted to the Knesset for
approval in the next session.
