UAE: Couple imprisoned for stealing luxury car worth Dh50,000 advertised on social media

UAE

An Arab couple in Ras Al Khaimah was charged with robbing a resident of a Mercedes Benz automobile valued at Dh50,000.

Because she pretended to be the buyer of the car, the woman was regarded as the principal defendant in the case. She received a six-month prison term.

According to court documents, the woman contacted the victim after seeing the victim's automobile up for sale on social media and expressing interest in purchasing it. He consented to a Dh50,000 price for the car.

After making the payment, the woman then instructed him to bring the automobile to the specified location and promised to email him a copy of her Emirates ID.

The woman said she had transferred the money using a banking app, but the guy testified in court that he had to drive the automobile from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah, where the couple allegedly resided.

The money would be in his bank account in roughly three hours, she added.

The pair had instructed him to meet them at a specific coffee shop when he got to Ras Al Khaimah. He was shown the pending bank transfer message by the woman. She instructed him to wait in the coffee shop until the money was deposited into his bank account before starting the transfer of the vehicle's registration.

When leaving her husband with the vendor, the woman snatched the automobile key from the table and left the coffee shop, stating that she would want to inspect the vehicle.

The complainant claimed that after some time, her husband also requested him a reason to use the toilet, but he never came back. And when the plaintiff walked outside to search for the couple and his automobile, he was unsuccessful.

The man claimed he made over 20 attempts to call the couple, but they had turned off their phones.

Nothing appeared in his bank account at this point, which is when he realised they had taken his automobile and had lied to him about sending the money to him.

He then made a complaint at the police station, and following an investigation, the prosecutors sent the case to Ras Al Khaimah's one-day court.

The pair failed to show up for their hearing, and a criminal judgement was rendered in their absence, sending the woman, the primary offender, to prison for six months.

The plaintiff then filed a complaint in Ras Al Khaimah Civil Court seeking that the offender pays him Dh10,000 in damages as well as Dh50,000, the value of the car that was stolen.

The case has not yet received a final decision.
