The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced the establishment of the UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerators (UICCA) during New York Climate Week.

The UICCA is a non-partisan climate action entity that aims to establish an independent body that enables collaboration, cooperation and innovation in the field of climate change. The entity will bring together members of the public and private sector, including academic institutions and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to drive the UAE’s commitment toward net zero by 2050. The initiative aims to scale up the UAE’s climate action.

Earlier, an initiative and national drive were launched by the UAE to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

The UICCA is set to become the first of its kind entity on a global scale. This will also contribute to the UAE’s wider sustainability and environmental goals. The UICCA will be led by Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, CEO and Founder of Alliances for Global Sustainability and Co-founder of Aurora50.

Under Sheikha Shamma’s direction, the UICCA will operate as a think tank and provide advice and recommendations to all stakeholders on the positive climate action plan, which will facilitate the transition to a green economy. This transition will help in boosting the GDP growth of the country, increase job creation, and reinforce the UAE’s position as a global Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) hub.

Sheikha Shamma, Executive Director of UICCA, said, “We have made significant headway towards implementing the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative – but, this is only our first milestone.”

Earlier, the Ministry of Climate Change and the Environment unveiled the UAE Climate-Responsible Companies Pledge to increase the engagement of the private sector in the UAE’s decarbonisation drive with the aim to achieve net-zero emissions. To achieve this ambitious target by 2050, the UAE called on all members of the private sector to collaborate.
