Johnny
Depp and Amber Heard's defamation trial
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's defamation trial became the
sensational news of the year. The defamation trial ended in June. The Virginia
court ordered Heard to pay USD 10 million in compensatory damages and USD 5
million in punitive damages to her ex-husband.
Depp sued his ex-wife for defamation over a 2018 op-ed in
The Washington Post, where she said that she was a survivor of domestic
violence. Depp’s name wasn’t mentioned in the article, however, Depp’s lawyers
argued it falsely implied that she was sexually and physically abused by Depp
in their marriage. Heard also countersued her ex-husband for $100 million in
2021.
When she lost the defamation trial, Heard’s legal team said
that she was unaware of the headline of her article. Heard requested the court
for a new trial. However, the Virginia court rejected Heard's demand for a new
trial. The judge also issued a written order denying Heard’s request for a new
trial.
