UAE delivers 1,461 tonnes of aid to earthquake-hit Turkey and Syria
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has sent 66 relief flights, carrying 1,461 tonnes of aid, to earthquake-hit Turkey and Syria in order to help earthquake survivors.
Under Operation Gallant Knight/2, the UAE has been
delivering relief aid to Syria and Turkey. The initiative is being led by the
UAE Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and
International Co-operation, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation and the
Emirates Red Crescent.
Under the operation, the UAE has already sent rescue teams
to Syria and Turkey. The UAE search and rescue teams saved two people in
Turkey. It also rescued a Syrian family of four from the rubble in Turkey. Col
Khaled Al Hammadi, commander of the UAE search-and-rescue team in Turkey,
lauded the efforts of the team.
The UAE also established a field hospital in Turkey. The
UAE's 50-bed field hospital arrived at Gaziantep Airport in Turkey in order to
help earthquake victims.
The UAE also launched an air bridge to transport urgent
relief kits, medical items and equipment to earthquake-hit areas in Syria and
Turkey. The UAE sent medical kits and shelter items to both nations using the
air bridge.
His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Emirates’
Chairman and Chief Executive, lauded the efforts of the UAE in helping
earthquake victims.
Last week, the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE),
His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, ordered the provision of $100
million to help people in earthquake-hit Turkey and Syria. Major General Saleh
al-Ameri, commander of joint operations at the UAE's defence ministry, lauded
the efforts of the UAE President in helping people in need.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister of
the UAE, also pledged $13.6 million in humanitarian aid to Syria when the
destructive earthquake hit Turkey and Syria last week.
