Protecting the environment is the UAE’s priority, says President Sheikh Mohamed
The President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has said that his country remains committed to safeguarding the environment.
He has said that the UAE’s priority is to protect the
environment and work to mitigate the effects of climate change. Hw wrote on
Twitter, "As the UAE marks National Environment Day, we remain committed
to advancing innovative solutions to benefit current and future generations.”
He spoke about the environment a day before the 26th National Environment Day.
He also talked about the 28th Conference of the Parties
(COP28). He said that the UAE would work in pursuit of a more sustainable
future. The COP28 to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
(UNFCCC) is scheduled to take place at Expo City, Dubai, from November 30 to
December 12.
The UAE President further said, "This crucial work will
continue at Cop28, as we invite the world to come together in pursuit of a more
sustainable future."
Mariam Almheiri, the Minister of Climate Change and the
Environment of the UAE, also said that celebrating National Environment Day
highlights efforts to fight against climate change and protect the environment.
According to WAM, Almheiri said this year's National
Environment Day celebrations aligned with Sheikh Mohamed’s aspirations of 2023
being the 'Year of Sustainability'.
Almheiri said that the COP28 slogan, “Towards a Sustainable
Future”, coincides with the Year of Sustainability. The minister said that the
upcoming UN Climate summit would help to find practical solutions to climate
and environmental challenges.
In recent years, the UAE has adopted several measures in
sustainable development, climate action, and food security. The country also wants to achieve net-zero
emissions by the year 2050.
The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment also
announced to ban on single-use plastic shopping bags in 2024 to protect the
environment.
