UAE Prime Minister announces new moon mission

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister, Vice President and the Defence Minister of the United ArabEmirates (UAE) as well as the Ruler of Dubai, has announced that the UAE will conduct the new moon mission.

On Wednesday, the UAE Prime Minister said that the UAE would try to land a rover on the Moon again. Dubai’s ruler said that his country would embark on a second attempt to land a rover on the Moon. His comments came after his rover crashed during the first attempted lunar landing on Tuesday.

The UAE leader visited the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) on Wednesday. The Vice President and Ruler of Dubai said that the UAE would reach the lunar surface. He further announced the development of Rashid 2, which will be sent to space.

According to the state news agency WAM, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid met the team leading the UAE's mission to the moon. He lauded their efforts and wished them success.

The team attempted to land a rover on the lunar surface. Japan's Hakuto-R Mission 1 spacecraft tried to carry Rashid 1 over the moon. However, it crashed while landing on the lunar surface on Tuesday.

Subsequently, Sheikh Mohammed wrote on Twitter, "We are a country founded on ambition.” He further said that “we kept our aspirations high.” “Emiratis have proved their ability to develop advanced space projects and rapidly create a vibrant national space sector. The UAE built a space sector from scratch within just 10 years. The Rashid Rover mission was driven by the country’s ambitious vision for space exploration,” he further said.

Recently, Emirates Mars Mission (EMM), a UAE space agency, released pictures of  Mars’ small moon known as Deimos. The observations of Deimos’ makeup and structure were also shared at the European Geosciences Union General Assembly.
