The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has launched a major drive to monitor plastic waste in the seas of the country ahead of the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties, also known as the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference.

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment of the UAE announced the initiative on Wednesday. The Ministry is set to identify the main types of waste in the seas and coastal areas of the country and then reduce the amount of pollutants.

Mohamed Al Hammadi, assistant undersecretary for biodiversity and marine life sector at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, said, “The plastic waste monitoring programme in the UAE’s marine environment represents one of our most prominent initiatives aimed at monitoring this type of waste and trying to limit these pollutants in all the country’s waters and beaches.”

The UAE is also set to impose a ban on plastic bags from January 2024 in order to protect the environment from plastic pollution. The nationwide ban will come into effect from January 1, 2024.

The UAE is also set to impose a blanket ban on the import, production, and trade of single-use plastic products from January 1, 2026. The UAE aims to decrease the production and use of single-use plastic products.

Last year, the UAE already took measures to tackle plastic waste. In 2022, Abu Dhabi, the Capital of the UAE, already imposed a ban on the use of single-use plastic bags. Dubai also imposed a tariff of 25 fils on the use of single-use bags from July 1, 2022. Sharjah had already planned to ban plastic bags from January 2024.

The UAE wants to achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2050. The UAE is the first country in the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region to announce its goal to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
