COP28: UAE hosts Green Retreat to set out climate goals
The United Arab Emirates (UAE), a country in the Middle East, hosted a Green Retreat to set out the climate change goals of the country ahead of COP 28, also known as the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference or the 28th session of Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC.
Reportedly, over 150 ministers from federal and local government and senior officials from the public and private sectors participated in Green Retreat. The event took place at Expo City Dubai, which is also set to host the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference from November 30 to December 12.
Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan, chief executive officer of the country’s Independent Climate Change Accelerators, Mariam Al Mheiri, the Minister of Climate Change and Environment in the UAE, Abdulla bin Touq, UAE’s Minister of Economy and the Chairman of the Securities and Commodities Authority, Suhail Al Mazrouei, the minister of energy in the UAE, Ahmad bin Abdullah Humaid Belhoul Al Falasi, the Minister of Education in the UAE, and Salem Al Qassimi, the Minister of Culture and Youth attended the Green Retreat event. The leaders reportedly discussed plans to safeguard the planet, according to The National.
The event was organised by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment in order to discuss the UAE's climate change strategies, including the net-zero emissions by 2050 initiative.
Mariam bint Mohammed Saeed Hareb Almheiri reportedly said, “The Green Retreat serves as an opportunity for participants to learn about the UAE's outstanding climate action record. We aim to develop a comprehensive climate action plan through the participation of all government and private institutions, which will create significant opportunities for economic growth and diversification, generate employment for youth, and preserve the environment.”
The minister of energy reportedly said that the UAE leaders can be united to ensure the success of Cop28 in Dubai this year.
