Mission to Zero’ campaign to replace Emirate's future

Mission to Zero

The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) has set an aspirational, long-term target to achieve zero consumption of single-use plastics, zero waste generation, zero carbon emissions, and zero biodiversity impact through its 'Mission to Zero' public outreach campaign. This goal is a part of its future vision for the emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The Agency has already made progress toward its "Mission to Zero" goal of eliminating single-use plastic. This will comprise a campaign with numerous offline and online activations aimed at the entire community, as well as businesses and departments of the government, as well as shops, eateries, and young people. In order to decrease their dependency on single-use things and minimise trash, Abu Dhabi residents are being urged to switch to sustainable environmental alternatives like reusable items.

Retailers, food catering businesses, restaurants, small grocery stores, as well as governmental agencies and private sector businesses, are the Agency's primary stakeholders. They are responsible for creating programmes to decrease the usage of single-use plastics. To achieve the zero-use goal, the general public is invited to share the campaign's messages with their social networks and adopt environmentally friendly behaviours.

The Agency has started a "Mission to Zero" communications programme that encompasses social media, media, workshops, online activations, and offline activations, as well as awareness-raising through the Green Business Network and the EAD-led Sustainable Schools and Campus Initiatives.

"Within our vision for reaching sustainable goals for the emirate of Abu Dhabi, we are continually attempting to invent ambitious and challenging solutions in our attempt to create genuine change," said Ahmed Baharoon, Executive Director, Environmental Information, Science and Outreach Management at EAD. Within its broader context, "Mission to Zero" is a concept that aims to lessen the use of single-use plastic, trash, carbon emissions, and any negative effects on our species and environments.

In light of the overall picture, one of our major objectives for Abu Dhabi Emirate is to significantly reduce the consumption of single-use plastic items. To that end, we introduced an integrated policy in 2020. Following this, we started banning single-use plastic bags on June 1st, and to support this bold effort, we have created the 'Mission to Zero' public awareness campaign to encourage people to switch to using more ecologically friendly, reusable items rather than single-use plastic.
