Baquer Namazi: US citizen arrives in the UAE for urgent medical treatment

Baquer Namazi, an American citizen detained in Iran for more than six years, has arrived in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), for urgent medical treatment.

The American citizen was released from the Islamic Republic of Iran after international efforts to secure his release were intensified because of his health issues. The UAE in coordination with Oman helped in liberating Baquer Namazi.

Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, appreciated the UAE and Oman for helping Baquer Namazi. Blinken wrote on Twitter, “We appreciate all those who contributed to his release, especially the Sultanate of Oman and the United Arab Emirates.”

Namazi is currently in the UAE to receive treatment. According to his family, he will have an operation at the Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi. Namazi reportedly requires surgery to clear life-threatening blockages in his left carotid artery. He is expected to undergo carotid endarterectomy.

The former United Nations (UN) official, 85, was arrested in 2016 while trying to visit his son, Siamak Namazi. He was convicted in Iran of "collaboration with a hostile government" and sentenced to 10 years in prison. His son was also detained by Iranian authorities on charges of collaborating with the US in 2016.

The Iranian authorities released Namazi due to health reasons in 2018 and closed his case in 2020. However, they did not allow him to leave the country.

According to the UN, Namazi had been permitted to leave Iran for medical treatment after Secretary-General of the UN, António Guterres, appealed to Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi.

Namazi’s lawyer, Jared Genser, reportedly said on Twitter, “It is impossible to overstate the extraordinary support being provided by Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi and the generosity of the UAE government in hosting the Namazis.”

The UAE has always helped people in need, especially American citizens. The UAE is all set to help Namazi as he needs an operation. The operation is important to clear life-threatening blockages in his left carotid artery.
