Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra has come out in support of Iranian women who have been protesting over the death of an Iranian Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini.
Chopra expressed solidarity with Iranian women. She wrote on Instagram, "Women in Iran and around the world are standing up and raising their voices, publicly cutting their hair and protesting for Mahsa Amini, whose young life was taken away brutally by the Iranian Morality Police for wearing her hijab 'improperly'. The voices that speak after ages of forced silence, will rightfully burst like a volcano! They will not and MUST not be stemmed.”
The Bollywood actress urged the authorities and people in power to help protesters and understand their issues. She further said, “These voices can no longer be forced to stay silent. I stand with you. Jin, jiyan , azaadi... Women, life, freedom.”
The protests in Iran erupted after the death of Amini. She was arrested on September 13 while leaving a Tehran metro station with her brother and other relatives. Iranian morality police reportedly arrested her for allegedly breaching Iran's strict rules for women on wearing hijab and modest clothing. They took her to the detention centre to teach her a lesson on the ‘Hijab’. However, she fell into a coma. She was in a coma for three days. The doctor pronounced her dead on September 16.
Iranian authorities said that she died due to heart problems. However, according to human rights activists, the cause of her death was a fatal blow to the head. They claimed that the morality police beat her because she wore a loose Hijab.
After her funeral, thousands of Iranians, including men, have taken to the streets over the last two weeks to protest the death of Amini. Women across the world have also shown solidarity with Iranian women.
