The Lebanese parliament fails to elect a new president after the fourth attempt
The Lebanese parliament failed again to elect a new president on Monday.
It was the fourth such attempt, raising fears that President Michel Aoun's term in office on October 31
will expire would end in a presidential vacuum. .
There are seven days until the end of Mr Aoun's term in office, although no clear successor has yet emerged.
Speaker Nabih Berri has tentatively called a fifth session of the 128-seat chamber through Thursday, although the date may change later.
A presidential candidate needs a two-thirds
majority in the first ballot
to secure victory, and an absolute majority is required in subsequent rounds.
