UAE sees spike in cases but treatment gets better.

Despite a recent increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the country, UAE has a good handle on the situation because of improving treatment techniques.

For five straight days, UAE registered more than 1000 cases of COVID-19 each day. It only dropped on Monday when 932 cases were recorded, in addition to three deaths. The total number of cases so far is inching towards the 100,000 mark and there have been 429 deaths. The spike in cases comes at the time when the society has been opening up further, with entry permits now being issued and entertainment options now open.

The country is responding to this by expanding testing in order to detect cases early and treat them accordingly. Each day, more than 100,000 tests are being processed. More 80,000 people have also recovered, including 1,287 in the previous 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health and Prevention. The recovery rate is, in fact, at record high levels and the chance of survival upon contraction of the disease is greater than what it was six months ago.

Doctors explain that there are better procedures and best practices now built into the healthcare system in order to handle the cases. For examples, the early wisdom of using just ventilators to save critically ill patients was proven to be inadequate. It was discovered that the virus causes clots in the blood vessel of the lungs and it was necessary to prevent and dissolve these. That’s why a regime of blood-thinning drugs also started to be included in treatment protocols.

Because there were cases of patients without symptoms suddenly collapsing due to drop in oxygen levels, it was recommended that all COVID-19 patients use a simple pulse oxymeter at home. They were advised to constantly monitor their oxygen saturations and rush to the hospital if it dropped below 93%, giving doctors more time to correct the oxygen levels.

Earlier only complications were being treated but now anti-virals are preventing people from becoming severely infected. UAE is following the trends seen in at least 50 other countries where there is a marked improvement in the recovery rates between the first and seconds waves of the disease.
