Berlin helped UAE-Israel live a historic moment: hosts foreign ministers.

On Tuesday, the foreign ministers of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Israel met for the first time following the agreement between the two nations, signed last month, aiming at normalising their ties. Berlin hosted the foreigner ministers meet, bringing together former foes on one table after about four decades. The historic deal between the two opposing nations was brokered by US President Donald Trump, giving them the option of settling their difference in a peaceful manner. Besides UAE, Bahrain also signed a similar agreement with Israel on September 15.

UAE foreign minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed thanked his German counterpart Heiko Maas for hosting the meeting with Israeli foreign minister whom he referred as “my new friend Gabi Ashkenazi”. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed said, “Three decades ago, the German people united Berlin to make history, and today we are gathered together in the hope of making history.”

He added, “In the UAE we are looking forward to opening more new horizons of cooperation to make peace, and to the economic opportunities that it opens up in the region... We will work together to take advantage of our world-leading capabilities in the research and development sectors to meet the needs of current and future generations.”

He also emphasised that opening of ties between Israel and the Arab world gave him hope that Palestinians and Israelis could work together towards a two-state solution, ending their decades-long conflict and providing a safer and brighter future to the children of the region.

Three leaders also visited the Holocaust memorial in Berlin together before starting the formal meet at the Villa Borsig in the Berlin’s district of Tegel.

The three nations came together to discuss expansion plans in various sectors such as food security, energy, trade, health, aviation and technology as well as exploring opportunities and strengthening cooperation in the region. UAE expressed its openness towards having more partners to promote international investment and was looking at strengthening ties with Germany and Israel for the same.

“Today, I discussed with my colleague Gabi Ashkenazi a set of proposals and ideas — perhaps most notably cooperation in the field of energy and the Fourth Industrial Revolution — in recognition that cooperation in research and development could represent a step toward a more stable, integrated and prosperous the Middle East,” said Sheikh Abdullah.

He added that the key reason the three nations (UAE, Germany and Israel) came together was their common interest in promoting tolerance, diversity and pluralism in the region. Besides, he highlighted their shared concern about the region’s stability and dangers of the threats of extremism and terrorism. He said, “Just as we do not compromise with terrorism, we must also not compromise with extremism and hatred.”

Ashkenazi said that Israeli would support any deal leaning towards the stability of the region, which could eventually make way for other agreements and treaties in the future.
