UAE’s need for electricity makes it shift to Coal power plant.

Dubai may be known for its skyscrapers but it's not something that is going to come in limelight this time. It is coming up with one of the most powerful and old resources to generate power, a coal power plant which will stand tall in the midst of the deserted land.

It is a $3.4 billion project called Hassyan plant in Dubai. The official announcement about the contribution was only made recently after it was revealed that the peninsula will also be building a nuclear power plant and has also been promoting its solar power plant named after Dubai’s ruler.

Dubai has been advancing vigorously in sustainable development goals especially when it comes to carbon footprints. The Emirate has planned to contribute the lowest in the carbon footprint in the world till 2050. Although, it will be a task to achieve this feat hand in hand to building a coal plant, which will have a huge impact in increasing the pollution level in the city, but it also to be noted that till now, the country has been maintaining its promise of decreasing activities that are harmful to the environment.

"Dubai was really saying we're far too exposed on gas imports, those could be interrupted by all kinds of things, the cost is very high and so we have to do something else to diversify our fuel supply and bring down the total cost," said Robin Mills, the CEO of Qamar Energy, a Dubai-based consulting company.

According to reports, the offers that were received by the Dubai officials were very tempting and thus the city decided to give in.

This has come after it was brought to view that Gulf nations are the hungriest when it comes to energy resources. Thus use of natural gas among political concerns is a difficult discussion for the Arab world especially because UAE is one of the four Arab nations who have blocked Qatar, a major gas producer.

Coal has been chosen because it is cheaper than other forms and does the work as efficiently, The demand for electricity in Dubai has increased by 10, 000 gigawatt from 36,297 to 46,704 gigawatt.  This plant is being built by China which says that though this 20 percent of the power of the overall city will be produced. The UAE joined the league of coal using nations like China and India and will essentially have to rely on imported coal from Australia and Indonesia to fulfill its demand.
