Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed announces UAE’s candidacy for UN Security Council.
The Minister of the Foriegn affairs and International cooperation officially announced the United Arab Emirates candidacy for two year term on the UN Security Council in 2022-23.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed made the announcement at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday. “My country will follow the same steps and principles upon which it was founded to maintain international peace and security in cooperation with the members of the council,” he said while addressing the UN General Assembly.
A total of ten non-permanent members panel will be set up serving overlapping two years under the five member states on the security council elected by the UN General Assembly. It will be the second time that the gulf nation will be serving on the council after the 1986-87 run.
Al Nahayan assured that the UAE will work towards solving important issues, confronting states with the motive to settle and approach issues with determination according to a report in the WAM.
Recent months have seen the UAE has risen on the international level especially after normalising the relationship with Israel for peace purposes in the region. The step taken by the UAE towards Israel has been credited by many and has been termed as a revolutionary step in changing the dynamics in the Middle East.
With this candidacy, the UAE has established itself as a more prominent figure at a global level. The security council is an extremely important entity as it is the only the only UN body that can make legally binding decisions such as imposing sanctions, determining the use of force and a lot of other advantages. This UN body has 15 members among which five have the veto-wielding power. The United States, Britain, France, China and Russia are the five members with the power.
The voting will take place in June next year and the to win candidates need to get the support of more than two third of the General Assembly. The seats are allocated for overlapping two years to ensure representation of all the geographical regions.
