UAE: Parents decide to shift to affordable schools for this academic year.

Post covid times have seen parents in the United Arab Emirates shifting their children to more affordable schools. As per a report by the National, admissions in affordable schools have increased as parents are trying to cut down on the educational spending.

Teachers of some schools also asserted that because of a lot of admission requirements, they are oversubscribed with waiting lists.

One of the schools in the UAE, the Winchester school said that they admitted double the number of children this year when compared to previous years. Jebel Ali from the school said that last year 350 students took admissions while this year the number has increased to 750. Fees at the school range from Dh13,800 for foundation stage to Dh30,800 for year 13. The principal of the school , Meenakshi Dahiya said that though every year we have a long waiting list but this year it is longer.

“We have more than 4,200 pupils at our school of which more than 700 pupils have joined this year. We did not get many pupils from outside the country but we got many pupils from higher-fee schools."

Another similar school, Darul Huda Islamic School also saw a rise in the number of pupils this year. Muneer Chalil, who is the principal of the school said that the school is for the middle income group. “We have around 200 new pupils. Pupils are moving from other schools. We attract people in the middle-income group.”

Teachers have also said that the parents are willing to make the shift even during the middle of the first term. Officials of another school, Delhi Private School Dubai said that they had a record high admission streak this year with 3,800 children.

The principal of the school said that they have enrolled 150 more students than this year while annually they take only 500 students. Rashmi Nandkeolyar said that falling under the lower fees category has definitely helped in attracting more pupils this year.

The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted the lifestyle and business of a lot of people. This is the time when people have realised that maintaining their finances from the very start is very important and beneficial for the future. This attempt by the parents to shift their children to affordable schools is due to covid-19 outbreak. The income and finances of these families have been hugely impacted that led them to taking this decision.
