Anwar Ibrahim becomes the tenth Prime Minister of Malaysia

Anwar Ibrahim

Anwar Ibrahim made history by becoming the tenth Prime Minister of Malaysia. He was appointed as the country's new prime minister by King Sultan Abdullah at the palace in Kuala Lumpur.

His appointment ended several days of post-election deadlock. Reportedly, His Majesty gave consent to appoint Anwar Ibrahim as the tenth Prime Minister of Malaysia.

His Pakatan Harapan (PH) party won the biggest share of seats in the 15th General Election (GE15). The party won 82 seats. However, his party did not have enough seats on its own to form a government at the federal level. He had to go into the coalition to form the government. Subsequently, King Sultan took control of the process of forming a new government in Malaysia.

PH and the Malay-Muslim Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition began negotiations to form a government. PN won the second-highest number of seats in the election. The PN bloc won 73 seats. They needed 112 seats – a simple majority - to form a government at the federal level.

The King met with Anwar and former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. After the meeting, Anwar was announced as the leader of Malaysia. The King also urged all politicians to work together for the benefit of the country.

Anwar Ibrahim

Anwar Ibrahim started his political career by founding the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia in 1971. Subsequently, former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad asked him to join the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). His political career was going great until 1998.

In 1998, he was accused of corruption. He was also arrested in the same year. His conviction was overturned in 2004. However, he was sent back to jail in 2015 over new sodomy charges. He was released in 2018. After facing many years of hardships, he finally became the new leader of the country.

The GE15 was held on 19 November 2022. No party won a simple majority in the election.
