Turkey earthquake shakes north-western region
A powerful earthquake struck north-west Turkey in the early hours of Wednesday morning, startling residents in an area previously devastated by tremors. The effects of the 5.9 magnitude quake were felt as far away as Istanbul, Izmir and Ankara. It hit Golyaka in the western province of Duzce, about 160 km east of Istanbul. The quake happened just after 4 a.m. Local time, the Turkish authorities said. There were no immediate reports of deaths, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said.
In Duzce, electricity was cut off and schools were closed for security reasons, the provincial governor said. People were injured when they ran out of buildings and jumped from balconies in panic, the
governor of the nearby city of Bolu said.

The US Geological Survey recorded
the earthquake as a magnitude 6. Dozens of aftershocks were reported
in the hours that followed.
