GAAC is an Emirati company that runs Kabul Airport in deal with the Taliban
The Taliban government in Afghanistan and the United Arab
Emirates (UAE) signed the deal to run Kabul Airport and several other airports
in Afghanistan. A Taliban Transport Ministry spokesman also confirmed that an
aviation security contract had already been signed with the UAE.
Under the deal with the UAE, Afghanistan citizens will be
employed at the airports, including in security roles. This is crucial for the
Taliban regime which wants to show they can create jobs for Afghanistan
citizens. According to various sources, Kabul airport would provide a main
source of intelligence on movements in and out of the country.
GAAC is an
Emirati company
Recently, several articles circulated online claiming that
Abu Dhabi-based firm GAAC Solutions manages the Afghan airport in cooperation
with an Israeli company. However, GAAC is a purely Emirati company with no
external partners.
The Government of Afghanistan selected the United Arab
Emirates (UAE) company to operate Afghan airports because they believed in the
capabilities of the UAE in the field of aviation. The UAE owns world-leading
companies in the field of aviation. Abu Dhabi Aviation (ADA) is the largest
commercial helicopter operator in the Middle East. In terms of aircraft fleets,
Emirates Airlines operates 268 widebody aircraft. This reflects the interest of
the countries of the world in cooperating with the UAE in the field of
aviation.
Those who spread the rumour that Israel is running the
airport in cooperation with the UAE are media tools affiliated with countries
that spread hatred. With this rumour, the main victim is not the Emirates but
the Afghan citizen. The countries that spread hatred seek to take Afghanistan
as a base for transferring their external differences by spreading rumours to
threaten the common interests between Afghanistan and other countries. This
matter directly affects the internal situation in Afghanistan.
The Taliban administration agreed to hand over
responsibility to the UAE-based company to handle operations at key airports in
the Herat, Kabul and Kandahar regions in Afghanistan. The contract between the
two countries made GAAC Solutions responsible for offering ground handling
services at these airports in Afghanistan.
The UAE'S negotiations are part of the effort by Abu Dhabi
to expand longstanding ties with Afghanistan's rulers that have included
government aid in recent months since the militants took power. GAAC also
expressed optimism about the potential of the deal because it would encourage
more air service and investment.

In May, the militants awarded the ground services contract
to GAAC. Reportedly, UAE state-linked company was involved in running security
and ground handling services at Afghan airports before the Taliban takeover. At
that time, there were no reports that the UAE company was cooperating with an
Israeli company.
GAAC had maintained a presence in Afghanistan since November
2020.
