NATO was
established on 4 April 1949
In 1949, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, the
Netherlands, Luxembourg, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Portugal and
the United States, signed the North Atlantic Treaty in Washington DC. They
formed an alliance called NATO to establish peace and security in these countries.
Members of
NATO
NATO is considered the most powerful alliance in the whole
world. After the establishment of NATO, 18 more nations joined the alliance:
Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary,
Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia,
Slovenia, Spain and Turkey.
NATO funding
Every member contributes to the costs of running the
Alliance. NATO Allies also provide
direct funding to NATO to cover the costs of NATO facilities.

NATO members are supposed to spend 2% of their GDP on defence
.At NATO’s Wales Summit in 2014, NATO asked all member states
to spend at least 2% of their GDP on defence. In 2014, the United States and
the United Kingdom spent 2% of their GDP on defence. NATO projects that by
2024, 15 member states will be hitting the 2% target.

According to Article 5 of the NATO agreement, an attack on
one NATO member is an attack on all its members. Every member will fight back
if anything happens to one country.

NATO’s Article 5 has only ever been invoked once in response
