China in talks with Taliban to expand CPEC to Kabul

 



China is establishing their first diplomatic contract with the military group of Kaul. It is aimed at pushing forward its ambitious project the China-PakistanEconomic Corridor (CPEC). This comes at an unfortunate time when world leaders are torn between diplomatic and difficult dealings with Afghanistan given the takeover of the country by the Taliban. 

 

Officials mentioned that in a bid to push the CPEC, China is exploring opportunities to exploit Pakistan to enter the war-torn country. Wang Yu, who is the Chinese Ambassador to Afghanistan, go ahead to meet Abdul Salam Hanafi, who is the deputy head of the Taliban political office in Qatar. Both the officials talked about effective communication and implementing consultations to those who need it at the moment. 

 

WangWenbin, who is the spokesperson from China’s Foreign Ministry added that China respects the Afghan people's independent decision on their own future and destiny, and supports the implementation of the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned principle. He also said that China will develop good, neighbourly relations of friendship and cooperation with Afghanistan and play a constructive role in the peace and reconstruction of the country.

 

According to reports, China has once again proposed the construction of the Peshawar-Kabul motorway as an extension of CPEC in Afghanistan, amid the recent developments in Afghanistan. The US withdrawal from Afghanistan has revived Chinese interest in the country. 

 

CPEC is viewed as a bilateral project between China and Pakistan with a large network of roads, railways and pipelines spanning over 3,000 km that will facilitate trade between China, Pakistan and other countries in the region. Under CPEC, Pak and China have initiated projects of 17,045 MW of electricity, national-level modernization of roads and rail infrastructure, new optical fibre connect with China, development and commercialization of Gwadar port and smart port city, 4 urban mass transit projects in major cities.
