UAE- First in the region to enter the clinical trial stage of the Corona vaccine.
Potential COVID-19 vaccine is at the final stage of the trials and is being tested on thousands of people to get the stamp of approval for launch. The vaccine is being tested on nearly 5000 people now and there are reports that the number is on the rise.
Abu Dhabi is expecting more volunteers to sign up for the testing of the vaccine, in phase III of its trial, where the numbers can go up to 15,000. Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Hamed, chairman of the Department of Health Abu Dhabi, was the first volunteer to receive the jab.
It is the first WHO enlisted global clinical Phase III trial of Sinopharm CNBG’s inactivated vaccine to combat COVID-19. The world’s first Phase III trial is the result of a collaboration between Abu Dhabi based G42 Healthcare and Sinopharm CNBG, the world’s sixth-largest vaccine manufacturer, ranked 169th on the Fortune Global 500 list of 2018.
There are many potential vaccines for coronavirus at different stages but only three have managed to be in phase III of clinical trials including Sinopharm vaccine. This vaccine, which has ‘inactivated’ attached to it essentially means that it uses a “killed” version of the virus that causes the illness. As per the reports, Volunteers will receive two doses of the vaccine within three weeks and will have to go through monthly follow-ups for a year.
With the effort of health officials and researchers, Abu Dhabi has made it possible for the vaccine to be developed earlier than imagined even though it is a process that takes years to roll out. Officials behind the Abu Dhabi trial said anyone who received the vaccine would be closely monitored for up to a year and asked to keep a "vaccine diary" to record any symptoms. With this development on the vaccine, the United Arab Emirates has become the first in the region to reach this stage of giving the world a potential COVID vaccine. None of the neighbours is even close to this achievement.
As for its availability, experts say that it will be made public in 2021, somewhere around the middle of the year.
