Face of Indian Cinema Post Covid

Living in unprecedented times battling with the COVID-19 pandemic has made the population anxious and apprehensive of the days ahead. The current trends suggest that we would need to make some significant changes in our lifestyles.

One such industry that is heavily affected during this crisis is the entertainment industry. Many livelihoods depend on the arts – performing and visual, which are affected vastly.

The world is slowly advancing towards normalcy and opening up transitioning with changes. Lockdown in India is going to lift eventually but the things won’t go back to exactly as earlier.

The cinema halls and malls will open but owing to the larger gathering at a place, how many people would like to go and enjoy a movie in theater or shop in the bustling malls? It looks unlikely at the moment.

People are adapting to online streaming media for entertainment. Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hotstar are just some of the most popular online streaming sources that have a record surge in subscriptions.

Watching movies at the comfort and safety of home with no fixed time slot to be booked seems too good an offer to be passed. Moreover, the variety of shows and movies one can access through a single subscription is unbelievable.

Looking at the loss Indian entertainment industry is incurring; many production houses are releasing their movies on OTT (over the top) media rather than waiting for movie halls re-opening. Does this indicate a future normal?

The experts say any habit needs 3-4 months to break. In India, movie watching in the theater is a habit, a ritual. A prolonged lockdown and halls closure might be enough to break this habit, suggest experts. This is going to have a definite impact on movie hall owners who are already in loss fearing a larger one.

This new trend of releasing movies on digital media has an advantage for production houses too as they can bypass problems related to censoring certifications.

When the theaters resume their operations in the future, how many people are going to spend a fortune on tickets and refreshments to sit for one movie at a designated time, and that too in a closed gathering? It doesn’t seem likely. When in the same amount a month’s subscription can be purchased for any digital streaming media with unlimited access and choice, in the safety of our living room.

It looks like the future of Indian cinema is going to have a massive makeover with the whole idea of weekend movie watching ritual changed.
