COVID-19: Stem Cell Therapy success, Emirati Dentist who received it doing well

Stem cell therapy that was given to an Emirati dentist after she contracted COVID-19 infection from a patient she was treating, has been reported successful. The dentist is reportedly doing fairly well. Dr Mohamed Salim Al Olama, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) recently visited the dentist along with the head of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Health Services Corporation.

An innovative stem cell therapy was provided to Dr Muhra Abdul Rahim Al-Awadi, a dentist. She is presently under the care at Obaidullah Elderly Hospital in Ras Al Khaimah.

Stem Cell Therapy is a new and promising approach making its way into treatment of COVID-19 patients. The efficiency of stem cell therapy is based on the immunomodulatory effect of stem cells. The studies conducted initially in Beijing on coronavirus cases and now being tested across countries suggest the intravenous transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs).

The researchers who conducted the Beijing study reported, “The intravenous transplantation of MSCs (Mesenchymal Stem Cells) was safe and effective for treatment in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia, especially for the patients in critically severe conditions.”

Dr Al-Awadi reports that she is doing much better post the stem cell therapy with no fever or symptoms of breathing difficulty. She is ready to head back to provide treatment to her patients. The visit from Dr Al Olama has motivated her to continue working diligently in healthcare, she said.

Dr Al Olama also made field trips to various hospitals for determining their readiness and standards of medical cadres across the nation, reported MoHAP.

He said that MoHAP is proud and appreciates the medical sector in the country. He further stated that it pays extra care for its employees’ health by providing the best preventive care and infection control.

Stem Cell Therapy is still in testing phase and progressively being tested in patients who are the true candidates. This successful case of stem cell therapy in the Emirati dentist provides hope to the successful treatment strategies in COVID-19 patients.
