NATO responsible for security of Baltic nations

NATO - Baltic Nations

Russia is a huge country when compared to Ukraine and also has a strong military which ranks among the top three of the world and hence it was obvious that it would be a way stronger force on Ukraine.

Moscow’s this act has raised a lot of concerns on the safety and security of the Baltic nations. They have extremely small territories with minimum military presence and hence the onus is on NATO to ensure they are safe and secure especially in context to the latest events in Europe.

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are extremely prone to attack. Even though these three nations are at extremely different positions when compared to that of Ukraine, at the same time, Russian aggression has been immensely growing in recent years and that essentially puts them in danger.

Baltic nations themselves raised the concerns due to the heightened security issues in the region in relation to the ground realities of what is happening in Ukraine. These three nations witnessed Russia’s invasion of Crimea in 2014.

It started off with the Donbas region and announced independence of Luhansk and Donetsk and then one sudden day announced invasion of the tiny country. This insecurity also dates back to 1940 when there was similar treatment from Russia’s side and these nations were put at risk due to greed.

A report confirmed that ‘Estonians, Latvians, and Lithuanians were then subjected to Moscow’s political, economic, and cultural control until the Soviet Union collapsed in 1992.’

Another threat that these nations face are of the democratic structure. They have for years tried to protect their democratic, sovereign culture but given the aggression of Russia, there might be chances when they may have to give up on those values. Hence, NATO involvement becomes all the more crucial.
