UAE shows success in trained dogs detecting Covid-19 in people.

During the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the United Arab Emirates chose to implement various measures in order to control the spread of the virus. One of them was training dogs in such a manner that they detect Covid-19 in people.

It was confirmed on Sunday by the Federal Customs Authority and the Higher Colleges of Technology that they have successfully accomplished the first of its kind study where trained dogs will be deployed to detect coronavirus infection.

A joint task force conducted a scientific study where the customs K9 sniffer dogs were required to detect the virus in the human body . The task force included experts, researchers and specialists representing the HCT and the K9 unit in the FCA.

The study was conducted in three phases and it revealed that there is a high rate of accuracy of dogs from the customs unit to detect coronavirus infected patients. The sample size consisted of 100 participants. The results came out soon and revealed that there was a 98 percent correlation between the PCR test results and the one detected by the unit.

The FCA proved its will to do work for the society and enhance its security and stability. The Commissioner of Customs and Chairman of the FCA Ali Saeed Mattar Al Nayadi also confirmed this saying that the success of the effort made by the UAE authorities simply ‘reflects the keenness to play an effective role in the protection of the society’.

He also said that the study furthermore identified the authority’s aim to implement the UAE leadership directives, the aspects of the covid-19 pandemic and the implication that came after the pandemic hit.

In future also, this initiative will help in use of K9 sniffer dogs in addressing risks of other things including natural as well as health disasters. They can also be used in detecting other harmful stuff like narcotics and hazardous materials.

He stressed on how using trained dogs for this purpose will not only be more affordable for most people but also will save a lot of time for the frontliners, who also contribute to the treatment of these covid-19 patients. It is clearly a cost effective way to save lives and it can also be used in other vital sectors.
