UAE: Abu Dhabi successfully conducts first ever bone marrow transplant.

was only last month when Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Centre had announced first ever successfully conducted bone marrow transplant in the United Arab Emirates and now the ADSCC has inaugurated the Abu Dhabi Bone Marrow Transplant programme, AD-BMT.

In a first for the UAE, the bone marrow transplant was conducted on a patient with multiple myeloma which is a form of blood cancer. This method is usually used to treat patients with hematological and oncological illness. In the UAE, a lot of people die due to cancer. It ranks third in the reason for the deaths in the middle eastern country. But it was only this year that bone marrow transplant was introduced. Now to the satisfaction of many Emirati citizens, they can receive treatment in the country itself without having to move to a foreign place without their family members.

Now thanks to the collaboration between ADSCC and Sheikh Khalifa Medical city, cancer patients in the UAE can seek treatment closer to their home and receive support and care from their family members as well.

"The patient is basically without an immune system while waiting for the transfused cells to take effect and must remain in isolation under the strictest infection control guidelines," said Dr. Yendry Ventura, General Manager of ADSCC and BMT Programme Director told WAM. "Since we are still in the midst of a global pandemic, we took additional precautions to ensure the best outcome possible for all involved."

ADSCC had announced earlier in May that they have achieved a significant amount of results in developing the Covid vaccine and by the end of that month they had already reached their groundbreaking treatment method for Covid patients. This itself demonstrated their efficiency as an institution. At present, they are already looking at the trials as they have entered the third phase of vaccine testing. And now announcement of the Abu Dhabi Bone Marrow Transplant programme demonstrates ADSCC’s continued commitment to delivering state-of-the-art and evidence-based services to the UAE market, including an array of stem cell therapies. It aims to make the BMT treatment available to all patients in the UAE who require it.

"It fills us with great pride to be part of a first for the country and to make such a life-saving treatment available and accessible to those who need it here," said Dr. Fatima Alkaabi, BMT Executive Director. "We are very grateful for the support and collaboration of SKMC in making this opportunity possible."

The continuous effort of the UAE to grow especially in the field of advanced medical studies shows the commitment of growth. The initial idea behind forming ADSCC was meeting the domestic demand for medical services without the citizens having to leave the country and go to a different place for treatment.
