UAE migrant workers are abandoned by their home countries
Many workers have been abandoned by their governments during a difficult period when the world is fighting the virus.
The United Arab Emirates is extremely concerned that some governments are not making any efforts to bring their citizens home. Due to the growing threat of the spread of coronavirus, many enterprises are closing down, people are losing their jobs. And despite the fact that the UAE extended the visa for migrant workers who are in the country, this does not solve the situation of those who are left without work or urgently need to go to their family.
Many states have already taken measures to repatriate their citizens, sent charters for them and provided security upon arrival at home. At the same time, most migrants are still in a difficult situation, since the governments of their states are not taking any action.
Indian Ambassador to the UAE Pavan Kapoor said New Delhi cannot repatriate a large number of its citizens, trying to overcome the coronavirus in its own territory. “After lifting the blockade in India, we will certainly help them return to their hometowns and their families,” said the Indian diplomat.
The ambassador of Pakistan to the UAE said the embassy is awaiting the permission of Islamabad for repatriation flights and hopes for "positive news in the near future." “We are very interested in bringing the Pakistanis back, but we need to complete the construction of our treatment and quarantine facilities,” Gulam Dastgir said.
Nepal cannot quarantine them, Prime Minister KP Sharma Olya is waiting for the next move. Similarly, while the governments of the Philippines are hesitant to pick up the plane and evacuate their citizens from the UAE. It seems that these countries refuse to repatriate their citizens because of fears that the country has no medical facilities or opportunities for safe quarantine return of returnees or to fight the outbreak of coronavirus.
For the UAE, the main goal is the safety and well-being of residents. The government has extended a series of quarantine measures and continues to help the medical sector by providing medical facilities for everyone needed. Many state institutions, as well as public places, are still closed. Putting safety first and taking into account the fact that in such a difficult period for the world, everyone should be closer to their loved ones, the UAE government strongly does not understand the actions of states ignoring their citizens abroad. Therefore, the United Arab Emirates could not leave this situation unattended.
The UAE has previously warned that it will reconsider labor relations with countries that refuse to return their citizens from the Emirates, including those who have lost their jobs or been fired as a result of the economic consequences of the global pandemic. One of the options under consideration is the establishment of strict quotas for work visas issued to citizens of these states, noted earlier in the UAE government.
All countries of foreign workers in the UAE must be held accountable for their citizens who wish to return home. Although these countries do not have the necessary resources, governments should organize appropriate places where workers can spend the quarantine period recommended by the World Health Organization. Also, these states should worry about the health and safety of their citizens, both domestically and abroad.
