Virus defies EU solidarity

In the world, apparently, now they will divide the time into what happened before the coronavirus pandemic, and what happened during and after it.  In any case, the virus made adjustments to relations between people, countries, forcing them to reconsider their views on many problems or postpone their solution until better times.  Recently it became known that this is exactly what the European Union and the USA did.

EU High Representative Josep Borrel over the phone discussed with US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo to join forces to contain and overcome the coronavirus.  This was reported by the press service of the European External Action Service.

“The parties discussed the coronavirus pandemic.  High Representative Borrel emphasized the importance of cooperation and international solidarity.  In light of the global dimension of this challenge and relying on a significant transatlantic partnership, the EU and the US have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to international efforts to overcome the pandemic, ”the EU spokesman said.

Borrell emphasized the need for international efforts to curb the spread of the pandemic and reduce its negative impact in the short and long term, noted the importance of ensuring accurate and transparent public information.  The EU High Representative and the US Secretary of State agreed on the need to strengthen international medical cooperation and humanitarian assistance for the most vulnerable countries.

The news of the intention to jointly combat the misfortune that swept the whole world is encouraging, but at the same time the question arises of the lack of assistance within the European Union, which, having left the EU countries to deal with an incomprehensible virus themselves, has recently adopted another member - Macedonia.

Against this background, Albania, which is not yet part of the European Union and has historically difficult relations with Italy, sent three dozen doctors to work there in the most affected regions - Brescia and Bergamo.

In turn, the Czech Republic sends to Italy and Spain ten thousand protective suits - received from China.  A week ago, a scandal erupted between Rome and Prague: Czech customs officers seized a shipment of Chinese medical supplies that were considered smuggled and confiscated for distribution to Czech doctors.  Later it turned out that it was humanitarian aid for Italy.
