South Korea, US to conduct nuclear tabletop drills in February
In an effort to better confront the North's nuclear threats, South Korea and the US will conduct tabletop drills next month that would involve the US extended deterrence programme, the South Korean defence minister announced on Wednesday.
The number of missile launches by North Korea
in 2018 was unprecedented, and U.S. officials have warned that the country may
be gearing up for its first nuclear device test since 2017.
The timing of the discussions to advance
collaborative nuclear planning and commence tabletop exercises has not yet been
determined, according to officials in both capitals.
Following a New Year's strategy briefing for
President Yoon Suk-yeol, South Korean Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup stated at a
news conference that the two nations will conduct tabletop exercises in
February under the assumption that North Korea would launch nuclear attacks.
