Partnership between Dubai Cares and COP28 UAE Presidency aims to boost climate action education

 

The incoming Presidency of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Dubai Cares, a UAE (United Arab Emirates) based global philanthropic organisation, have joined hands to work on climate education outcomes on the sidelines of COP28. 

The COP28 is scheduled to take place at Expo City, Dubai, from November 30 to December 12 2023. The partnership between COP28 UAE Presidency and Dubai Cares aims to boost and strengthen education's role in climate action.

Dubai Cares will reportedly host the second edition of the RewirEd Summit, the global education cooperation platform, with a focus on climate action education. With this partnership, Dubai Cares aims to support the UAE’s efforts for climate action by uniting education and climate actors. The summit would help to transform the education systems in order to mitigate climate challengesThe announcement was made on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum’s annual gathering in Davos, Switzerland. Majid Al Suwaidi, Director General of COP28, highlighted the importance of integrating climate and education to work towards the field of climate action. Dr Tariq Al Gurg, Chief Executive Officer and Vice-Chairman of Dubai Cares, said that the organisation would support the UAE’s efforts to prioritise education in climate discussions.

The UAE is committed to working in the field of climate action in order to mitigate the effect of climate change. The UAE has adopted several measures and efforts in sustainable development, climate action, and food security.

Last year, the UAE joined the High Ambition Coalition (HAC) to End Plastic Pollution, which aims to eliminate plastic pollution by 2040. The UAE also partnered with the United States to work in the field of climate innovation. The two counties also launched the Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate (AIM for Climate), which aims to increase investment in climate-smart agricultural innovation and R&D across the world. 

The UAE also established an Independent Climate Change Accelerator to enable collaboration, cooperation and innovation in the field of climate change. The UAE called on all stakeholders to collaborate and provide advice on the positive climate action plan.

The UAE also aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. It launched various initiatives, including a decarbonisation drive, to achieve net-zero emissions. The UAE's various initiatives and efforts towards climate goals helped to protect the environment. 

Recently, the UAE announced that it would ban single-use plastic shopping bags in 2024 to protect the environment from plastic pollution. The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment also said that it would impose a blanket ban on the import, production, and trade of single-use plastic products in 2026.
