Crown Prince Bin Zayed Attends Winter Olympics On Special Chinese President Invitation
In a surprisingly balancing equation, while
the whole world has denounced the Winter Olympics, Mohamed bin Zayed of UAE
has arrived in Beijing to attend the event. His Highness, Crown Prince of AbuDhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces came in response to
an invite he received from Chinese counterpart, President Xi Jinping.
The
reasons are simply trade related. While Europe and many other nations have
decided to show no diplomatic presence at the Olympics, UAE is showing its
friendship with His Highness making a personal appearance.
Nearly two-thirds of Chinese exports to Europe, the Middle East and Africa pass through Emirati ports. In recent years, Chinese state-owned companies have played a significant role as builders, owners, and operators of terminals and other port infrastructure in the Gulf.
The flame was held by a soldier from the Chinese Army and the games kicked-off in great spirit of sportsmanship. This is after a span of 14 years that China is getting the chance to host the prestigious Winter Olympics. The celebrations remain sober keeping in mind the social distancing protocols in place due to added worry of Covid-19 variant spread. As of now, around 3,000 athletes have already arrived in Beijing to compete in various indoor and outdoor events.
